Nature is not silent. There is noise in nature but nature does not speak for itself. Learning to listen to the noises of nature is a part of our survival. The triumph of technology across nearly all human cultures on earth has a profound impact on our ability to listen carefully and critically to what our natural environment is telling us. It is time we collectively shut up and listen.
Sunday is Lake Superior Day. Lake Superior is the second largest body of freshwater in the world. Lake Baikal in Russia has greater volume and Lake Victoria in Africa has greater surface area. Lake Superior is NOT pristine; it is in better condition than other liquid, surface freshwater. Lake Superior is the only freshwater “inland sea” with a character resembling our great global oceans. As residents and visitors of the Lake Superior basin, we are citizens of an inland sea society. A vision for the Lake Superior ecosystem begins; Water is Life; and the quality of water determines the quality of life. My hope is that TGIF readers will pause on Sunday for 30 seconds of silence to honor the importance of fresh water. That is what Lake Superior Day should be about.
The strength of our silence cuts us and others both ways.
